Dress as your Favorite Vacation Day 2020
By: Lucy Kirshner
Do you have a favorite vacation? Is it Disney,Universal Studios, a beach, or wildwood? OLA wants to know! On Friday, February 21st, OLA had a dress as your favorite vacation day,and the cost was 1.00 dollar. Both students and teachers can participate.
On this day, students could wear a shirt, hat, pants, shoes, and maybe bring a plush toy (one on the smaller side) that related to their favorite vacation ever. You didn’t need to have all of these things, but they were great to have!
When that day came around,it was clear, most people had on stuff that represented Disney. Disney seems to be our school’s favorite place to vacation. Even though most did Disney, I did Universal Studios. I think that both are great though!

Valentine's Day
BY: Abigail Ward and Abigail Raup
Valentine’s Day was named after St. Valentine. Valentine’s Day is a day to show love to one another. Valentine’s Day was declared an official day in February 14, 1537. St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. That is how Valentine’s Day came to be!
PRESIDENT’S DAY
If you call this holiday PRESIDENT’S DAY you are using the informal name. The formal name is Washington’s Birthday.
Washington was born on February 22, 1732 according to the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian calendar was adopted by England and its colonies after Washington was born. According to the Julian calendar he was born on February 11.
This year President’s Day is on February 20. Next year it is on February 19.
Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809. During his term as president Lincoln freed slaves and he became an American icon.
In conclusion President’s Day is celebrated for both of these presidents but it is mostly influenced by George Washington.

Christmas
By: Kaitlyn Durning
Christmas is a Christian holiday that honors the birth of Jesus. It is also a time of year to get together with your family, and spread joy. Americans have made different traditions throughout the years. Christians didn’t begin celebrating Jesus’s birth until the third century A.D.
The Pew Survey said that religious and non –religious are similar in celebrating Christmas tradition. Most Christians today can’t imagine Christmas on another day than December 25. In fact, for the first three centuries Jesus’s birth wasn’t celebrated at all. The first official mention of December 25 as a holiday honoring Jesus’ birthday appears in an early Roman calendar from 336 A.D.
New Christmas rituals throughout the country are slowly becoming familiar during the Christmas season. One tradition that almost every major city has is an outdoor skating rink. Another tradition is having presents gift wrapped. Even though there are a lot of modern day traditions there are still some old ones that are still sticking around.

Thanksgiving by Chinyere I.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with family. You have a big feast and together you pray before you eat and say what you’re thankful for. Did you know that the first people to celebrate Thanksgiving were the Pilgrims? They celebrated the First Thanksgiving in the year of 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. For Thanksgiving you have a big feast with whoever you are celebrating with. Some of the things you eat in thanksgiving are turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, cranberry sauce, biscuits, ham, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, and various ice creams.

Interview With The Founder of Teach Anti Bullying Inc.
Teach Anti-Bullying Inc

By: Paige Pellegrino & Corinne Lacey
This campaign was about anti-bullying. Anti-Bullying is very serious. I think that we should take this topic very seriously because bullying can take the lives of many children and teenagers. There are four types of bullying. They are duration, frequency, intensity, and power base. I hope that we can all work together to stop bullying all around the world. It is very heartbreaking to see a lot of kids come home from school and not want to go back and face all of the people that are teasing them. Children with physical and learning disabilities and children who suffer are the ones who get bullied the most. In the United States, grades 6th, 7th, and 8th are the main grades that kids bully each other the worst. After we listened to this anti-bullying campaign, we’ve realized how bad bullying actually effects the lives of so many kids and teens. So starting today we can start to make a difference in the life of all of this tragedy. |

Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic schools throughout the United States. It starts on the last week of January and it lasts a whole week for all catholic schools. Christmas
By: Paige and Corinne
Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is a time to be together with your family and friends. Christmas is not about the presents under the Christmas tree, it is about bonding with your family. Christmas is in the season of winter and is on the 25th of December. The word “Christmas” means “Mass of Christ.” Today we know that Christ was not born on the 25th of December. The date was chosen by the Romans, these celebrations came on or just after the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, to announce that winter is not forever, that life continues, and an invitation to stay in good spirit.

History of Thanksgiving
by Francesca Gearhart and Evelyn Doran
The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 to commemorate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after a harsh winter. In that year, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving.
Each year on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans gather for a day of feasting, football, and family. While today's Thanksgiving celebrations would likely be unrecognizable to attendees of the original 1621 harvest meal, it continues to be a day for Americans to come together around the table-albeit with some updates to the pilgrims' menu.
The Pilgrims sailed on the Mayflower in 1620, and their friends, the Native Americans helped them hunt, find food, and survive. The native Americans were very great people because they helped them and were very kind and helpful. Now those are great friends!

Halloween
By: Molly Sweeney, Khadija Kamara, Francesca Gearhart, and Mackenzie Dyer
Halloween began in an old, Celtic celebration of the dead. The people, who were once found all over Europe, separated the year by four major holidays. The year began on a day around November 1st. That day marked the beginining of winter. Since they were farmers, it was a time when cows and sheep had to be moved. Crops were harvested and stored for winter. The date marked both an ending a beginning in the continuous cycle.

Mackenzie Dyer Interview

Helping our neighbors in Alabama
By: Miss Nancy Perone
For the past 8 years, the Dyer family has gone to Greensboro Alabama to help with many different projects( such as Hale County Animal Shelter and the HERO Organization). It started as a one time commitment but the family kept the tradition going. Together they've helped to build an animal shelter, 3 schools, over 15 homes, a daycare center, and a vegetable garden for the locals to get free vegetables. The family says that most of the people they meet do not have basic necessities that we take for granted like running water or electricity but they are some of the most appreciate people you will ever meet!
If you are able to help, they are collecting:
-For the daycare: Baby food, baby snacks, baby spoons and forks, and baby bibs
-For the nursing home: deoderant, soap, fixodent, and chapstick
-For the animal shelter: leashes or collars, dog food, treats, and cat food
-EXTRA: Blankets, formula, baby toys, toys, animal toys, books, ANYTHING used is perfect!
If you are able to help, the Herald Newspaper club will take your donations for the Dyer Family until Friday, April 4th. Thank you in advance for your help!

St. Patrick's Day
by: Joe Jordan
Everyone wears green on St. Patrick’s Day because it is a significant color for celebration. Even though St. Patrick wore blue, green is still the correct color for March 17th. St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17th and it is believed that St. Patrick died on this day. There are many traditions all over the world that are on St. Patrick’s Day. For example, there is a parade in New York; people dye the Chicago River green, and there are also parades in Philadelphia and in Savannah.
