Nelson Mandela
By: Sean Thornton Nelson Mandela: you might have heard that he was a man who died recently. You may think he was just some random guy who was famous. He was much more than that. Born 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa, Mandela’s original name was Rolihlahla (meaning troublemaker) but was changed to Nelson later. He decided to stand for what is right, and decided to fight the South African government with peaceful protests. However, the government fought back with violence. Mandela decided it was time that he fought with violence too. That decision got him arrested. For 27 years. He was released in 1990 and soon after, he rose in popularity and became president in 1994. He was the first black president of South Africa. He served until 1999, when he retired. Nelson Mandela died December 5th, 2013 at the age of 95. To this day, he is renowned as one of the most influential people of the modern day. OLPH CYO HAPPENINGS
St. John Hospice Casserole Bake By: Antonina Klimowicz The Youth Ministry of Our Lady of Perpetual Help baked casseroles for St. John Hospice on October 4. We baked about 12 casseroles and some looked so good we could’ve eaten them right there, if they were cooked. Linvilla Orchards By: Antonina Klimowicz On October 24 the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Youth Ministry had a great time on a hayride on a cold autumn night at Linvilla Orchards. First we received cookies from the nice witches and then we went to a bonfire afterwards. There were marshmallows everywhere and warm apple cider too. Flyers New Coach
By: Joe Jordan Recently, all Philadelphia sports coaches have gotten fired. Including Peter Laviolette, the former head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Three games into the season, Peter had gotten fired, and a new coach stepped up for the position. That man is Craig Berube. Berube is not only a new head coach, he is a former Flyers player. After 3 straight losses in the beginning of the season, Berube turned things around and got Philly’s first win of the season. Their first win was against the Florida Panthers. The score was 2-1. Their record now is 7-10. Currently, they had a 3-game win streak, but lost that streak to the Winnipeg Jets in a shootout. The score of that game was 3-2. In my opinion, I think the Craig Berube is a better coach than Peter Laviolette. Hopefully, with the help of Berube, the Flyers could make it to the playoffs this season. So, I think Paul Holmgren, the Flyers’ General Manager, made a fantastic decision on picking Berube as the new head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. Eighth Grade Show
By: Stephanie Ashworth and Jenna Patterson On March 28, 2014, the Our Lady of Angel’s eighth grade class put on the annual eighth grade show. The theme was British Invasion. They opened the show with “We Will Rock You”. There were many songs in between and even had the Beatles and One Direction. The eighth grade closed the night with “Tonight We Own the Night” It was a great way for the eighth grade to come together as the beginning of the end of the year. They made a lot of money which will help their field trip. 1D
By: Kaitlyn D, Katelyn C, Jessie, and Stephanie Ashworth One Direction had many ups and downs on their road to success and fame. They started off as contestants on The X Factor in the UK. The members of One Direction are Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. They weren’t always a band though. They started off as solo contestants in the X Factor, until Simon Cowell made them a band with a record contract. Their first tour was as an opening act for Big Time Rush in 2012 and they have come very far since then. They now have two albums Live While We’re Young and their most recent one Midnight Memories. They are the big thing now and who knows what their success will bring them in the future. Bruce Springsteen

This will be his 18th album and the first he has released since 2012. The album will also have music from Bruce’s band “The E Street Band” and will feature Clarence Clemons (the famous saxophonist from The E Street Band who died in 2011.) Millions of fans will are excited about this new album and can’t wait to listen to “The Boss”! Curtains
By: Stephanie Ashworth Saturday, December 7, 2013 was the closing night of Cardinal Ohara’s play, Curtains. My friends and I went, and it was a really fun night. Curtains is a Who Dun It comedy. It was filled with talented singing, dancing, and acting. It was based on a theater company who has many problems including bad reviews, low pay, an obnoxious director, and even mother daughter problems. That doesn’t even compare to the problems they face when the leading lady, and others get murdered and they have to stay in the theater, with the murderer in their mist, until they figure who killed them. The show was funny, well played out, and just a fun show to see with the family. I had a great time watching it, and I’m excited for whatever show they have for the spring! |
OLA Zoo Trip
On October4, 2013 everyone from Our Lady of Angels Regional Catholic School went to the Philadelphia Zoo. That day was also the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi and we went there because of him and of his great love for animals. It was an awesome Ola zoo day! Everyone had a fantastic time and so did the animals… we think. Since we went in the fall the animals were not as lazy as they normally are because it’s the perfect temperature for them. We saw all kinds of animals like: zebras, giraffes, red pandas, penguins, hippos, etc. Sadly, though the elephants weren’t there because they needed more space so they were moved to another Zoo. The students had a great day whether they were singing on the bus ride there, running around the zoo, or singing “Summer Lovin” on the ride home everybody enjoyed the trip. By: Emily and Maura Bailey Meets Selena Gomez
By: Maura Fee On October 18th singer/actress traveled to Philadelphia for a concert but when people started tweeting her using the hash tag #selenameetbailey she went to CHOP to do a meet and greet with one of her biggest fans. 10 year old Bailey Gutelius who has Cystic Fibrosis was in the hospital and was almost going to miss the Selena Gomez concert that she had waited so long for. Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic lung disease that Bailey has had all her life. If not for her mother reaching out to Fox 29 news and the support of fans this meeting may not have been possible. 2012 Summer Olympics

By: Megan Fee The Divergent trilogy is a hit! The Divergent trilogy written by Veronica Roth was a best seller! Divergent is the first book of the trilogy and the movie came out on March 21. The main protagonist, Beatrice Prior also called Tris Prior, is faced with the decision of her life as she must choose faction before blood, and how she will live for the rest of her life! Shailene Woodley played the character of Beatrice Prior and Theo James played the character of Four also known as Tobias Eaton. It is a must read!!! I remember, personally, when I was reading the book I couldn`t put it down for a second! Beatrice must embrace her Divergence and fight for what is right! The first book of the trilogy is Divergent then the second book is Insurgent and the final book is Allegiant. The author Veronica Roth has also started working on other books to go along with the series such as The Transfer, Free Four, and The Initiate Story and many more. These other books will consist from Tobias`s side of the story and follow along with Divergent. I TOTALLY recommend this book because it is time well spent exploring your mind and the movie is phenomenal too! Midnight Madness
By: Megan Fee and Emily Capaldi On Monday, November 25, 2013 the well-known British boy band, One Direction, released their third album, called “Midnight Memories.” This pop/rock album includes the No.1 hit “Best Song Ever” which came out over the summer. It’s their third album in a row that top the Billboard charts at number one! Midnight Memories was released by via Columbia Records, Syco Music, and Sony Music Entertainment. Personally, three of our favorites ( Emily and Megan) is “ Half a Heart”, You & I, and Happily! “Half a Heart” is a bonus track! Even though this album was different from the other two , we think it is fantastic! They are considered the most spectacular, talented, creative, hysterical, hot band, and they are perfection! Also any directioners out there in the world, just wanted to let you know that This Is Us comes out six days before Christmas so go nag Santa! So wishing you a 1Dful (wonderful) Christmas to the fans! The Fault in Our Stars
By: Sean Thornton and Stephanie Ashworth The Trailer for The Fault In Our Stars was released on January 29th, 2014. The Fault In Our Stars is a nationally bestselling book by John Green. It tells the story of sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenage cancer patient who meets Augustus Waters, a former cancer patient. The movie adaptation comes out June 6th, and if you don’t see it, then you don’t have a soul. The film stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Augustus. Fans of the book will easily recognize scenes from the book in the trailer. John Green was active on the set of the film, so it most likely will be an accurate book to movie translation. As fans of the book, we are very excited. |
Pretty Little Liars
By: Jenna Patterson The Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode aired on October 22, 2013. It was thrilling episode. There were many shocking revelations during the episode. The scene was in the town of Ravenswood. Part of the show took place in the cemetery at a party. They were on a search for their “dead” best friend Alison. They also revealed a member of the A team. I personally loved the entire episode but I know that there were many different opinions, For example Stephanie Ashworth did not like the episode until the end of the show. Some of the actresses involved in the show are Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, and Ashley Benson. The 4 main characters, Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna, had vintage dresses. Pretty Little Liars will be coming back for their fourth season in early January. Editorial: Government Shutdown
By: Sean Thornton As you may or may not know, the U.S. government shut down in October. Even if you are aware of this, you most likely do not understand why. The last government shutdown was in 1995-1996. The shut down in the 90’s was the longest in U.S. history. The explanation for why the shutdown occurred is easy; the House (made mostly of republicans), and the Senate (mostly made of democrats) could not agree on a budget, and things went bad. When we look at it that way, it is just another “the parties can’t agree” situation. This stuff happens quite frequently, but this time it was major. Another main thing about this is that we already owe millions and millions of dollars to other countries, and we are showing them that we can barely handle our own country, let alone be a world power. I mean seriously, we are one of the strongest countries in the world, and we can’t even keep our government open. I believe that that says something about humanity. Another reason the shutdown occurred is Obama Care. The republicans REALLY do not like that. Now that Obama Care is, well, a thing, people are mad! Between the ‘impossible’ website and just the whole idea itself, there is a lot of negativity. However, Obama Care is a lot easier than the old healthcare system. Quite frankly, you can save hours signing up for Obama Care compared to the old healthcare way. Argue all you want, that is the truth, and I do not understand why it is so hated. Thankfully, despite the arguing, the shutdown only lasted 16 days and the government is back together. We can never be sure how long that will last… The Oscars

By: Maura Fee Back in November Bonner-Prendie put on the musical Changing Minds. Changing Minds is best described as a cross between High School Musical and Freaky Friday. The story is about when two teens from different social groups change minds. Popular surfer boy, Kyle Fairbanks (portrayed by Torin Reese) and the class nerd, Natalie Watson (portrayed by Meghan Hill) switch minds after fight at an ancient mission. While trying to figure out how to get back to normal they deal with each other’s problems like Kyle’s nasty girlfriend Ashley (portrayed by Emily Reynolds) and Natalie’s up and coming scholarship exam and speech. Not to mention keeping the secret from their best friends who are very suspicious during these strange events. Kyle’s best friend, Brad (portrayed by Jack Ellis, Our Lady of Fatima alumni) and Natalie’s best friend, Claire (portrayed by Olivia Cicalese) eventually find out the secret and are willing to help their friends out. But Changing Minds isn’t all about Natalie and Kyle, the musical has somewhat of a side story about a geeky boy, Freddy (portrayed by Nick Gallo) and his many attempts to ask popular girl, Shelly (portrayed by Sam Henderson) who says no out of fear of public humiliation. The students put a lot of work into the musical and they put on an amazing performance. You could tell that the students put their hearts into the play from singing to set building to dancing everybody contributed a lot. In the end Ashley gets what she deserves, Freddy and Shelly go to prom together, Brad and Claire found feelings for each other, and Kyle and Natalie now are in a relationship. |
